What is Samba Dance?

How to Dance Samba

What is Samba Dance?

Now that’s a big question!

Here’s a slightly poetic answer:

Samba Dance is a dance style from Brazil and it’s a beautiful blend of 3 cultures:

The native people of Brazil, the European Portuguese who came to Brazil to utilize her resources, and African people, specifically the Yoruban people from the northwest of African, who the Portuguese stole and enslaved.

Samba Dance is influenced by being near the equator. It’s HOT! :)

And, Samba is influenced by the Ocean. The country of Brazil runs along much of the East Coast of South America. Meaning that the Ocean is a big part of the energy and culture of Brazil too! And then there are the amazing BIG cities, the Amazon Rain Forrest, and the desert interior. And the music! The dancing!

“Samba” Dance is not just one dance either.

How to Samba DanceThis word represents many different styles of Dance–each with their own story, dance rhythms and instruments, and costumes.

And each with a different “spiritual intention.” This “spiritual intention” is what makes dancing Samba so special and fun.

And of course, the intoxicating weave of Hips–the feeling of 3 hip wiggles over 2 beats of music.

Samba Dance is polyrhythmic movement to polyrhythmic music. Meaning that there are layers of rhythms that overlap.

And a different part of your Body plays a different part of the Brazilian orchestra. Your feet play the heartbeat, or the bass of the music. Your hips play the ride, the snare, the clave. Your shoulders play the shakers. And your arms tell a story.

And so, as you can imagine, it takes a little loving practice and persistence to be able to play an entire orchestra of music with your body.
