I say “Samba,” you say “Funk!”
Samba…Funk! Samba…Funk!
I met San Francisco Carnaval King Theo the night of the walk-through for my very first San Francisco Carnaval Queen & King dance competition.
Now Theo was showing us how we could win this competition that brings together the Bay Area’s best world-music dancers. He said: you really have to be yourself, and wow people.
And then he proceeded to dance Samba across the stage, leaping off of the stage and hitting the ground still Dancing! Oh my!
King Theo is a world-class performer…and an awesome teacher and community creator.
Theo directs the amazing Samba-fusion drum and dance company in Oakland, CA: SambaFunk! And I have been delighted to be a part of this amazing community of super talented drummers, dancers, artists, and leaders the past two years.

This show was so much fun! I love Samba Fusion shows.
But do you know what I love even more than the feathers, the sequins, the thrill of performing?
The biggest thing I love about Samba dance is the Community.
Now if you are lucky enough to have Samba dance and music, and Capoeira (the Brazilian martial art) in your community–I want to encourage you to go participate!
I have had the opportunity to dance with Samba communities in New York, California, Brazil, London, and Paris…and let me tell you that they all share the same exciting enthusiasm, comittment, and welcoming energy of creating Community…
